Ilocos Norte sets aside ₱60 million for El Niño preparedness

The provincial government of Ilocos Norte has allocated approximately ₱60 million for measures intended to reduce the potential effects of a strong El Niño episode, including preparations for water shortages and support for farmers.

PNA reported the allocation on October 12, 2026. The provincial government also discussed establishing a task force to improve coordination among offices and agencies responsible for water security and disaster preparedness.

Reported measures include installing rainwater-catchment systems at Bureau of Fire Protection stations across the province’s 21 municipalities and two cities, providing catchment equipment to 37 schools facing water shortages, and working on deep-well projects for water supply, particularly for public hospitals.

Agricultural measures described in the report include a proposed fuel subsidy of about ₱1 million for farmers, early-maturing seeds, drought-resistant crops, repairs to small water-impounding projects, and construction of additional farm reservoirs.

These preparations could help reduce the effects of prolonged dry conditions, but their effectiveness will depend on timely implementation, available water, and coordination with farmers and affected communities.

The ₱60-million allocation should not be confused with actual expenditure or completed projects. Residents should seek updated information on procurement, project locations, funding releases, and implementation progress.
